  • New service standards for superfast fixed broadband services proposed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority have met with a critical response from Communications Alliance. The industry group is urging the regulator to step back from direct retail regulation and take a principles-based approach.

  • The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is hardening its concerns over Google's potential power in the wearables market. It said it will not accept a long-term behavioural undertaking offered by Google that sought to address issues about its proposed acquisition of Fitbit and has set a new decision date of 25 March 2021.

  • Macquarie Telecom Group has amended its syndicated facility agreement with ANZ and the Royal Bank of Canada to provide an additional $50m of debt capacity.

Regional Queensland telco Dreamtilt will next year begin the rollout of infrastructure to support wireless services based on mmWave spectrum, after the company successfully secured access to area-wide-licences in the 28GHz band.

  • Boeing Australia has urged the Australian Communications and Media Authority to consider revamping the five year spectrum outlook component of its spectrum planning and management processes.

  • The Australian Communications and Media Authority has indicated it is favouring mobile satellite use of 60MHz of spectrum in the 2GHz band as one of three options it is canvassing as part of a replanning process.

  • ACMA has also begun its consultation into replanning the 3700-4200MHz band, which could open up the frequency for more wireless broadband.

  • IPSTAR Australia subsidiary Orion Satellite Systems has commenced a $3m upgrade to its core systems, including three gateways in Kalgoorlie, Broken Hill and Auckland.
